In a surprising move, the Mets have optioned Dominic Smith to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.

Smith's performance has been subpar this season, slashing .186/.287/.256 with no homers and 14 RBI over 86 at-bats.

He's been splitting DH duties with J.D. Davis, who has been performing a bit better (.221/.322/.338, 1 HR, 9 RBI), but neither player has been able to secure that wide open position since the start of the season. And now there's some competition with Nick Plummer and Luis Guillorme performing well.

Smith has also been vocal about his role on the Mets, as he sees himself as an everyday player in the league.

"If there’s a team out there that wants me to play and wants to let me play, I would love to play every day. That’s just how I feel about it," he said recently.

"I like where this team is going. I feel like I can impact this team in a number of ways, and that's being [in the lineup] every day, in my opinion."

While Smith will look to reset and find his swing in Triple-A, RHP Adonis Medina was recalled from Syracuse to take his spot on the 26-man roster.
