Mets manager Mickey Callaway held a second gathering with the media on Monday, an hour before their game against the Phillies, to apologize for his conduct regarding a verbal altercation with Newsday beat reporter Tim Healey that happened on Sunday.

Callaway had stopped short of an apology during his regularly scheduled press conference earlier in the day despite being given several opportunities to do so.

"I wanted you guys to know that in my meeting with Tim, I apologized for my actions," he said in the second media session. "I apologize. I regret it. The distraction it has caused to the team and like I said earlier, it's something we'll learn from. It's something I'm not proud of, I'm not proud of what I did to Tim, so for that I'm definitely sorry."

Callaway and Jason Vargas, who threatened to fight Healey and was restrained by teammates, were both fined by the team for their actions.

Vargas also did not apologize, but called it "an unfortunate distraction."

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said that his "confidence remains the same" in Callaway's ability to do the job.
