With the Mets at Summer Camp amid the coronavirus pandemic, GM Brodie Van Wagenen has told players he'd rather have them stay 10 feet apart instead of the recommended six. And manager Luis Rojas is optimistic his leaders in the clubhouse will help keep their teammates in check. But Michael Conforto knows how quickly things can get out of hand.

"All of us understand what a positive test does, and really it’s going to shut you down for over probably something like three weeks, so obviously it’s something we worry about,” Conforto said over the weekend during a Zoom call with reporters. "That's kind of the reason we're going above and beyond in these protocols."

There have been several big-name players who have been diagnosed with coronavirus since the intake screenings began, including Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves and DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees.

“I did see some big names in there," Conforto said about the positive tests elsewhere in baseball. "Anybody in our family who gets it, we feel terrible for, but it’s kind of coming down to this is a big part of the season where the healthier the team can stay it really increases your chances of winning games when we do get to the season. We have to be real vigilant and responsible to make sure we have all our guys out there when the time comes.”

Speaking Sunday, Dellin Betances said he's been getting used to the "new normal" of talking to his teammates from a distance, adding that the Mets are doing a "tremendous job" with the protocols that are in place.

“Obviously we have some time to get ready for what it’s going to be like," Betances said. "The Mets are doing a tremendous job for everybody being safe as everyone can. A walk-off home run (during the season), I don’t know what’s going to happen because guys are going to get excited.”

While he's getting used to social distancing on the field, Betances has family considerations that are more important.

“Yeah my wife is pregnant so it’s trying to be as careful as we can. I’m actually blessed to be home and don’t have to leave them at all. I think the Mets are doing a tremendous job keeping our distance and being as safe as we can.”
