Marcus Stroman was pulled from Tuesday's game against the Atlanta Braves in the top of the second inning with what was later announced as left hip soreness.
After throwing his 21st pitch of the night, Stroman walked around the back of the mound somewhat gingerly and could be seen clearly trying to stretch out his hip, until Luis Rojas and the training staff came out to speak with him.
After a couple of warmup pitches, the decision was made to pull Stroman from the game.
Stroman was replaced on the mound by Yennsy Diaz, as the Mets eventually fell to Atlanta 3-0.
After the game, Rojas didn't have much more information to share, but did explain where the soreness came from.
"Nothing more. He’s getting further checked there," Rojas responded when asked for an update. "Right now, it’s just left hip soreness. That’s what he told us on the mound. On one of the pitches, he landed and he felt that he hyperextended a little bit, so it started getting sore.
"His warmup pitches, (James) McCann came in and gave feedback that he wasn’t really following through. He wanted to stay in, but I think it was wise to come out and be cautious. He can hurt something else by not being as deliberate with his delivery, using his hips, so it was the right thing, coming out. We’ll reassess tomorrow and see how he is."
Rojas also said that he was currently unsure as to whether or not this injury will cause Stroman to miss his next start, but noted that the team will conduct further testing on Wednesday.
Any kind of injury for Stroman would be another huge blow to the Mets’ rotation, with Joey Lucchesi set to undergo Tommy John surgery, and Carlos Carrasco and Noah Syndergaard still being a long way from returning to the mound. On top of that, Robert Gsellman, one of their best long relief options, has a torn lat and will miss six weeks.
In need of pitching help, Rojas did announced that prospect Tylor Megill will make his big league debut on Wednesday, as he'll get the start against the Braves.
