The Mets made a slew of roster moves ahead of their game against the Red Sox on Thursday night.
Eduardo Nunez was placed on the IL with a left knee contusion. He had to come out of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves after running out a ball to first base. He was initially diagnosed with a hyperextended knee.
In turn, Brian Dozier was called up from the Alternate Training Site in Brooklyn to take his place. Dozier was added to the player pool last week on a minor-league deal after he was cut by the San Diego Padres. The 33-year-old played with the Washington Nationals in 2019, where he hit .238/.340/.430 with 50 RBI over 135 games.
Also, Hunter Strickland was designated for assignment. Though he did well in summer camp with the Mets after being picked up, he struggled in his three games with the squad. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. Daniel Zamora was brought back to fill his spot in the bullpen.
Finally, the Bruce Maxwell signing was made official as well. Maxwell was the first MLB player to kneel during the national anthem back in 2017, and this is his first job in professional baseball since 2018 when the Oakland Athletics let him go. He will report to the Alternate Training Site to join the others in the player pool.
