Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Davis both have the eligibility to return to the Mets this week off their IL stints. But Luis Rojas says one is currently a few days ahead of the other.

“Nimmo is closer than J.D,” he told reporters via Zoom on Tuesday. “They’re both progressing better lately. Nimmo is swinging full go, swinging off of BP. We’re going to test some velo machine and different things, so we can ramp it up game speed and that’s when we’re going to make the final decision to potentially come off this weekend.

“J.D. is progressing better and better each day as well. We’re also looking to do some things as well like incorporate the velo machine, but maybe a little bit further ahead for Nimmo.”

Nimmo had to hit the IL after getting hit with a pitch in his hand, causing a bone bruise in his left index finger. Davis, on the other hand, has been dealing with a left hand strain that made it hard for him to grip a bat and go through regular swings.

But what’s the exact difference between both players at the moment? Rojas broke it down.

“Just in terms of the progression, he’s just not hitting live right now off arms or machine, where Nimmo is right there to hit off the velo machine,” he explained. “It can be a matter of only a few days difference, but we want to see the response when he hits off the live arm because Nimmo’s response was good. He felt fine yesterday, he took a lot of swings yesterday on the day off.
