Joey Lucchesi has "a significant tear" in his UCL, SNY's Steve Gelbs reported Monday night.

Lucchesi will get a second opinion, but Tommy John Surgery is a possibility.

This is a huge blow for the Mets and Lucchesi, who was dominant as of late with a 1.19 ERA in his last five starts.

The Mets were already looking for potential support at the end of their starting rotation, and with Carlos Carrasco and Noah Syndergaard still not available, this is the absolute worst time to be losing Lucchesi.

Lucchesi originally hit the 10-day IL on June 19 with left elbow inflammation.

After Game 2 against the Atlanta Braves on Monday night, manager Luis Rojas spoke about Lucchesi's injury and said the team will wait for a second opinion before making a decision on the surgery.

"Yeah I mean we heard about that today, we found out about the torn UCL," Rojas said. "Even though that's the first thing that comes to mind about having the surgery, he wanted, and we wanted to hear a second opinion on it. That's the plan right now. We'll get a second opinion on it and then we'll see if this is something that can be treated, or is this something that will need the actual surgery. We are going for a second opinion as of now just to make sure."

Rojas went on to say how the lefty had been improving start after start, and how he knows this is a tough loss for the rotation.

"He's been pitching so well, especially that last game he threw really well," Rojas said. "He had his max in pitches, and we were hoping to let him go the third time through. Adding another pitch to his repertoire, the command and effectiveness on all his pitches. It's hard, it's a big loss for us. Talented young kid, that I think is just getting better every time he goes out there. Let's see what comes out of this, the second opinion I think will let us know for sure what the decision is gonna be."
