Mets INF/OF Jeff McNeil talked Wednesday about what he called a "very minor" intercostal injury that kept him out of action on Tuesday night and could mean another night off on Wednesday.

McNeil suffered the injury while taking swings before Monday's game, later receiving an MRI that confirmed the strain.

"I felt something kind of tweak in my back a little bit. It wasn't major or anything, and took one more swing and kind of felt it again," he explained. "Wasn't anything major, but I didn't want it to become a bigger problem. So I went up to the trainer, told him what was going on. Thought it was best that we shut it down and get it looked at."

As far as his potential availability for Wednesday night's game against the Nationals, McNeil said it's too soon to tell.

"Feeling good," he said. "I'm unsure of availability. Have to go through all my pregame stuff, see how it feels, and see where we're at after that."

McNeil, who played catch on Tuesday and hit off a tee, mentioned how the Mets' off-day on Thursday could be a help when it comes to giving the injury some more time to heal, so it wouldn't be surprising if he was out of the lineup again Wednesday -- giving him three full days off from game action.

The Mets are in a tough spot right now with McNeil's status uncertain, Amed Rosario's status uncertain, and Robinson Cano on the IL.

The team will also be playing down one player on Wednesday, with Ryan Cordell having been DFA'd and the Mets not replacing him on the roster with roster size throughout baseball set to be cut from 30 players to 28 players on Thursday.
