Paul Sewald's walk and error help set up the Cubs for a walk-off 2-1 win in the 11th inning of Tuesday night's suspended game at Wrigley Field.

Things you should know about the game...

1) Following a clean 10th inning by Jerry Blevins, Sewald (0-5) walked Javier Baez -- who had been issued 13 unintentional free passes --- all season and threw away Victor Caratini's sacrifice attempt. Kyle Schwarber was intentionally walked to load the bases and Ben Zobrist came through with the game-winning single off Daniel Zamora.

2) Jacob deGrom was brilliant on Tuesday night, allowing one run over seven innings thanks in large part to a play not made by Jay Bruce at first base. The right-hander also escaped a two-on, no-out situation in the eighth to keep the game tied, 1-1. DeGrom allowed a run on eight hits and a walk and struck out 10 while lowering his Major League-leading ERA to 1.68. It marked the 24th consecutive start he has surrendered three or fewer runs in a start which tied Dwight Gooden for the club record set in 1985.

3) DeGrom drove in the only run for the Mets with a two-out infield single in the sixth, his second hit of the game. New York left 11 men on base and finished 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Amed Rosario doubled and finished with three hits. He and deGrom combined five of the Mets' eight hits. The rest of the lineup combined to go 3-for-30 with 13 strikeouts.

If the season ended today, there is zero doubt in my mind that Jacob deGrom should win the N.L. Cy Young Award. But the season does not end today and "should" and "would" have two very different meanings. I take nothing away from Max Scherzer or Aaron Nola, the two pitchers who figure to be deGrom's main competition for the award. But if anyone out there can honestly say that Scherzer, Nola or anyone else in baseball is a better pitcher right now than Jacob deGrom, they are lying to themselves.

What the Mets' hurler is doing this season has gone beyond the absurd. He surrendered one earned run, struck out 10 and walked four in his previous start last week against the Giants ... and it was considered a subpar outing. With no margin for error in virtually every start, deGrom has gone out and thrown up zero after zero while simply dominating the opposition. His fastball is electric and comes in harder than ever before. His slider is simply nasty and his changeup is a neutralizing third pitch. But what separates deGrom is his ability to mix all his pitches while throwing up, down, inside or outside. He's just unpredictable and for lack of a better term, unhittable.

That a season like he's having is being wasted by the Mets' inability to construct a competent offense and defense behind him makes it all the more impressive and all the more infuriating. No one can dispute that deGrom is having one of the best seasons by a starter in recent memory, but there's always an underlying "what if?" attached to it, which is truly a shame.

News and notes...

The Mets have lost nine consecutive games to the Cubs and 14 of 15 regular-season contests at Wrigley Field. New York has dropped three straight after winning four of five.

DeGrom has yielded three runs or fewer in 26 of his 27 starts this season and one earned run or less 18 times. His 12 starts of seven or more innings while allowing one or fewer runs leads the Majors while his 19 straight quality starts equaled the club mark set by Tom Seaver in 1973.

DeGrom has nine double-digit strikeout performances this season and 29 in his career. He has made 19 of his 27 starts this season against teams with winning records and owns a 1.47 ERA in those outings.

Brandon Nimmo was activated from the disabled list prior to the game and went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts. He replaced the traded Jose Bautista on the roster.

Jeff McNeil tripled to right-center leading off the seventh but did not score. The rookie has hit safely in 14 consecutive starts and is hitting .398 (23-for-58) in that stretch.

Michael Conforto went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a walk. He left eight men on base.

Rosario has eight multi-hit games this month and is batting .321 (27-for-84) with seven extra-base hits, 15 runs scored and 14 RBIs in his last 19 games.

Jacob Rhame was added from Triple-A Las Vegas as the 26th man for today's regularly scheduled game.

What's next...

The Mets (58-74) look to avoid a three-game sweep by the Cubs (78-53) on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field at 2:30 p.m. on SNY.

Jason Vargas (4-8, 6.96 ERA/5.47 FIP, 55 K's, 1.608 WHIP) takes aim at his third straight win after tossing six scoreless innings against the Nationals last Friday. The southpaw has a 2.08 ERA and has worked into the sixth in each of his previous three starts after not doing so in his first 12. Vargas is 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA in five career meetings with the Cubs. He has not faced Chicago since 2013.

Alec Mills (0-0, 1.17 ERA/0.94 FIP, 10 K's, 0.522 WHIP) makes his second career start and third appearance this season. The 26-year-old allowed one run and struck out a career-high eight over 5 2/3 innings in his first Major League start last Friday against the Reds. Mills has never faced the Mets.
