Negotiations for the 2020 MLB season are still ongoing, with the league and players going back and forth on trying to find a compromise for players' pay.

When the season does eventually start, new rules could be in effect for the shortened campaign, such as a universal DH for both the American and National Leagues.

On Friday's episode of The Cookie Club presented by Insomnia Cookies, Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis discussed one potential rule change that they'd be in favor of: Starting off all extra innings with a runner on second base.

That rule change would likely help prevent games from going well beyond the ninth inning, and in a compacted season, that move could save a lot of relievers from throwing more innings than they should and risking injury.

"We both know we love the DH. We're definitely excited about that," said Smith. "I think as far as a runner on second base, I would say that I like that, personally, just to speed up some games and save some arms, because sometimes we're out there in the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th inning, and that's going to hurt us for two weeks down the road."

"Yeah I kind of like the idea of the runner on second base," said Davis. "I think it would work out just for this season of having so many games so compacted in the schedule. It would kind of help us out, because for us, at least, how many extra-inning games did we have? Probably a dozen, give or take, maybe less.

"But it sucks, especially for going from an extra-inning game and then waking up for a day game. It's terrible. So for this circumstance of starting a runner on second due to what's going on, I'm all for it."
