This past weekend, the Mets and San Diego Padres were in deep talks with the Padres regarding a deal for Chris Paddack and Eric Hosmer, with the latter being put right back on the market to trade.

But Dom Smith was also involved in those rumors, which doesn't come as too much of a surprise. He's heard the whispers in the past.

"This is something that’s not new to me and something that’s just going to be a part of the game," he told reporters on Monday after the Mets took on the Houston Astros, where Smith went yard to right field.

That's always a sweet comeback when you hit a dinger after being involved in potential trade talks. Head coach Buck Showalter loved seeing that, but also said he was transparent with Smith while everything was going on.

"Guys who aren’t good players don’t get talked about a lot. Dom, that’s my message to him too. When something’s viewed as a surplus, we don’t view it as such. We view it as an asset," Showalter said.

Smith is considered a surplus due to the amount of outfielders the Mets currently employ as well as Pete Alonso being the everyday first baseman. Robinson Cano doesn't help matters at the new universal designated hitter slot, too, so Smith is expendable.

But like Showalter said, he's a good player that will get his reps. It may not be as many as he likes, but Smith's lefty swing is one pitchers can't get out too easy.

Either way, Smith will continue to roll with the rumors and take things a day at a time.

“It is what it is, but I’m here. Like I told y’all, I’ve been hearing it. I think I won’t get traded until it happens, but I’m happy to be here. Happy to be a Met and I love this organization, I love this city and I love this team," he said.
