The Mets lost the rubber game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday by a score of 4-3.

-- Christian Scott was on the mound making his second start after the All-Star break, looking to give New York its second consecutive series win to kick off the second half.

Things started out well for the right-hander, who got through a scoreless first inning before finding trouble in the second following a leadoff walk and a single put runners at the corners with nobody out.

Scott managed to get a popout and a strikeout for a pathway out of the inning, but a fly ball hit towards the wall in right field by Joey Ortiz eluded the glove of Brett Baty and went for a two-run triple. Christian Yelich tacked on a run with a single before Scott punched out Jackson Chourio to end the inning.

-- Between innings, Baty went over to Scott in the dugout to seemingly apologize for his misplay in the field, a position he is still learning and not quite adept at yet.

-- Because the play was ruled a hit instead of an error, all three runs were earned on Scott’s ledger. They would be the only runs he allowed in the game, though, albeit in just 3.2 innings after interim manager Andy Green pulled the 27-year-old in the fourth inning following 89 pitches (53 strikes).

Scott’s pitch count rose quickly in this one thanks to deep counts and walking three while striking out six. He also allowed four hits and saw his ERA rise to 3.13. It was also his shortest outing of the year since his season debut on April 23 when he retired four batters while walking five and hitting a batter.

-- Offensively, Marcus Semien gave the Mets an early lead with a solo shot in the second inning. It was just the veteran’s second hit and first extra-base hit since returning from the IL on July 18 with a left hip flexor strain. The second baseman has struggled mightily in his first year in New York, hitting .209 with a .606 OPS.

In the fifth inning, Baty got one of the runs that his misplay produced back by hitting a solo homer and getting the Mets closer, 3-2. The home run was Baty’s sixth of the season and third in his last seven games as he tries to salvage a disappointing season. This month he’s slashing .273/.293/.436 in 55 at-bats.

-- The only other bright spot on offense for New York was A.J. Ewing, who continued his excellent rookie campaign with two hits, including a double, although he did make the last out with the tying run on base after slashing one to third base where Ortiz made a great play and threw him out.

-- Other than that, the Mets finished with eight hits and struck out 15 times against Brewers starter Logan Henderson (nine Ks in 5 IP) and Milwaukee’s bullpen. They were, however, able to get the tying runs on base in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Francisco Lindor and Carson Benge each had base hits, but Brice Turang made a sensational play on a ball hit up the middle by Jorge Polanco and threw in time to first base for the final out of the inning.

In the ninth, Francisco Alvarez drove in a run with a single to get New York to within a run, but Ewing's last out ended the game.

-- Huascar Brazoban entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and escaped the jam with a double play. He went back out for the sixth and retired the first two batters before a ground-rule double by Ortiz knocked him out of the game for A.J. Minter. The left-hander was unable to strand the inherited runner and allowed a triple to the lefty-swinging Yelich that extended the Brewers' lead, 4-2.

-- Ortiz and Yelich combined to go 5-for-8 with two triples, a double, a walk, four RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

-- Luis Torrens entered the game in the seventh inning and played first base for just the second time this season.

His field-aided triple got the Brewers on the board and gave them the lead and he finished 3-for-3 with a homer shy of the cycle and a steal while making the great play to close out the game in the ninth.
