The Mets officially announced the signing of center fielder Albert Almora Jr. on Wednesday night.

To make room for Almora, the Mets designated RHP Corey Oswalt for assignment.

Almora’s signing, which was first reported this past Sunday, figures to be another depth move for the Mets.

The Mets have beefed up their bench this offseason, adding Almora, Jonathan Villar and Jose Martinez as potential bench options to go along with players like Tomas Nido and Luis Guillorme.

The 26-year-old Almora has always been known more as a defensive player than for his abilities with the bat, and he’ll likely be a platoon-type player and late-inning defensive replacement, along the lines of what Juan Lagares and Jake Marisnick have been in past years.

In 489 career games, Almora has slashed .271/.309/.398, but he had only 30 at-bats in 28 games with the Cubs last season.

Oswalt, meanwhile, has appeared in 23 games over the past three seasons, mostly used as a spot-starter or a long-relief option. The former seventh-round pick appeared in just four games last season (one start), with a 4.85 ERA in 13.0 innings. For his career, Oswalt has pitched to a 6.19 ERA with a 1.423 WHIP.
