Andres Gimenez debuted with a strong rookie season for the Mets in 2020. MLB.com took notice Wednesday, awarding Gimenez a No. 20 ranking in the outlet's top 25 rookies for 2020.
Mariners OF Kyle Lewis topped the list, followed by a Padres 2B Jake Cronenworth and Brewers RHP Devin Williams.
Gimenez was the No. 2 player at his position behind Tigers SS Willi Castro, who ranked ninth.
The 22-year-old Gimenez played a handful of infield positions -- second, third and short -- while slashing .263/.333/.398 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 49 contests throughout 2020's 60-game regular season.
Team president Sandy Alderson recently looked back at Gimenez's first year and how a versatile role for Amed Rosario could be on the horizon.
"There's a lot to like about Gimenez," Alderson said Dec. 16 on SNY's Mets Hot Stove. "He's young. He's left-handed, which would typically make him better against right-handed pitching, which is the predominant side in the game. He's terrific defensively. Very good base-runner. Probably not as disciplined at the plate as we'd like, but had solid offensive numbers this year. There's a lot to like there."
