The Mets and center fielder Kevin Pillar are in agreement on a deal pending a physical, sources tell SNY's Andy Martino.

Per MLB Network's Mark Feinsand, his contract breakdown is as follows:

2021: $3.6 million
2022: $2.9 million player option (no buyout) or $6.4 million club option ($1.4 million buyout)

So Pillar either gets one year and $5 million, two years and $6.5 million, or two years and $10 million depending on the option.

Pillar split his 2020 season with the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies, slashing .288/.336/.462, hitting six home runs and driving in 26 runs in 54 games.

Though he has some solid offensive numbers, his defense is what's most important, since Brandon Nimmo does not profile in center field defensively.

That is why this signing is a bit of a head-scratcher. Pillar has been a negative defender in center in each of the last three seasons.

In 2020, he was worth -4 DRS despite playing there in just 21 games. He also has a -1 OAA over last four seasons.

The Mets also already have a backup center fielder in Albert Almora Jr., creating a potential logjam on the bench while the starting spot still isn't fixed.
