Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said that his summer camp player pool would be evolving, and that's exactly what happened yet again on Tuesday.

The Mets have signed veteran right-handed reliever Jared Hughes to the player pool. He joins the likes of Melky Cabrera and Hunter Strickland among others who have signed with the Mets ahead of the 2020 MLB season.

Hughes, who will be 35 on July 4, spent time with the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies last season. Most of his career was with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2011-2016 before he moved on to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2017 and eventually the Reds in 2018. He was in Houston Astros spring training earlier this year before being released.

Hughes brings a 2.88 career ERA to the Mets, with his best season coming in 2018 when he posted a 1.94 ERA over 72 appearances (78.2 innings). He is also the only big league pitcher to throw in at least 63 games over each of the last six seasons.

The Mets' initial player pool was only comprised of 45 players, so it was evident Van Wagenen and his staff were going to make to changes to that. And those changes haven't been additional prospects within their system, but players who could earn a place on the eventual 30-man Opening Day roster (It will first be 30 players, then narrowed down to 28, and eventually to 26).

Hughes, given his experience, is certainly among that group that might be on the Mets' roster come the end of July.
