The Mets officially begin reporting to Citi Field for Summer Training on Wednesday, where they will undergo coronavirus intake screenings before being cleared.
The expectation is that Friday will be the first day of full workouts, though it is not yet clear how many players and coaches might be at Citi Field and how many might be at MCU Park in Brooklyn (the Mets' other Summer Training site that they are using in order to better keep players socially distant).
While the Mets' initial 60-man player pool over the weekend only had 45 players on it, the team has since added six more players, bringing the total number of those expected in camp to 51.
Here's our Mets 30-man roster prediction 2.0...
Regular Lineup
Wilson Ramos, C
Pete Alonso, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Amed Rosario, SS
Jeff McNeil, 3B
J.D. Davis, LF
Brandon Nimmo, CF
Michael Conforto, RF
Yoenis Cespedes, DH
Speaking earlier this week, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said Conforto (who was dealing with an oblique injury in March) would be a full go once camp opened.
As far as Cespedes, Van Wagenen said that while they still need to get eyes on him after he reports, the team is optimistic he will be able to serve as their DH on Opening Day.
Starting Rotation
Jacob deGrom, RHP
Marcus Stroman, RHP
Steven Matz, LHP
Rick Porcello, RHP
Michael Wacha, RHP
The 60-game season could lead some teams to change the way they operate when it comes to traditional five-man rotations, bullpen usage, and other strategy. For the Mets, things remain the same regarding the rotation.
According to Van Wagenen, the plan is to operate with a five-man rotation, with the above five pitchers locked in.
Bullpen
Edwin Diaz, RHP
Dellin Betances, RHP
Jeurys Familia, RHP
Justin Wilson, LHP
Seth Lugo, RHP
Robert Gsellman, RHP
Brad Brach, RHP
Jared Hughes, RHP
Daniel Zamora, LHP
Hunter Strickland, RHP
With the Mets adding Jared Hughes on a big league deal, the full expectation is that he will be on the 30-man roster. So subtract Tyler Bashlor (who was in the 'pen in our roster prediction 1.0) and add Hughes.
Also among the Mets' recent signings was Hunter Strickland, who struggled in 2019 but whose career success figures to give him a leg up over someone like Walker Lockett. So we're adding Strickland, and subtracting Lockett.
The final spot goes to Daniel Zamora, who gives the Mets a second left-hander.
Bench
Dominic Smith, 1B/OF
Jake Marisnick, OF
Luis Guillorme, INF
Tomas Nido, C
Rene Rivera, C
Melky Cabrera, OF
Three of the Mets' recent signings and player pool additions were position players -- Melky Cabrera, Gordon Beckham, and Ryan Cordell -- but it's fair to believe only one of them (Cabrera) has an inside track at a spot on the 30-man roster.
So Cabrera is in and Andres Gimenez is out.
