The Mets’ signing of J.D. Martinez gives an immediate boost to the team’s lineup, but it also impacts Mark Vientos.

Despite this fact, the 24-year-old sounded rather unfazed by it when asked for his reaction by reporters following Friday’s spring training game against the Yankees.

“Not really a reaction,” Vientos said. “Just nice. Good for the team.”

Vientos has shown signs of his potential this spring, particularly with his power -- hitting five home runs, including one on Friday off Yankees pitcher Luis Gil. But he is 12-for-54 at the plate (.222) with a .250 on-base percentage.

Manager Carlos Mendoza, who couldn’t comment on the “rumors” of Martinez’s signing until it was made official, said that the plan was always for “these kids [to] get an opportunity” and that they “would have some tough decisions at the end of the camp.”

“I'm pretty sure we have those conversations with everyone and the biggest thing with Mark is to continue to do the things he's been doing,” the skipper said before Friday's game. “Opportunities will arise. Is that Opening Day? Is that at some point during the season? The one thing that, not only Mark, but people that are gonna fight for that roster spot is just control the things that you can control.

“And I know it's hard, but what I’ll say, specifically about Vientos, he's a huge part of our future here and our present, too. So he'll get opportunities, and he's one of those that we’ll see what happens.”

Mendoza’s message to Vientos today when they spoke was to “keep being yourself.”

After the homer today, he said it was “good that he continued to have good results.”

“With all the rumors and all that, it was good to see him going out there and continue to do what he's been doing, and things that he can control and that's by going out there and performing,” Mendoza said. “I'm happy for him.”

He added: “I thought for him to go out there today and have that type of game and put a good swing on a fastball like that is good to see.”

Nevertheless, Vientos could still be on the Opening Day roster, as Martinez will reportedly need time to ramp up before joining the big league club.

Despite possibly losing his roster spot when Martinez is ready, Vientos ultimately was not taking the signing personally and did not seem to have any regrets.

“The opportunity that I got,” Vientos said, “I feel like I made the most of it.”
