The Yankees were hoping to trade for a starting pitcher, and had been linked to most of the top names on the market. Here's the latest...

July 31, 4:01 PM:

GM Brian Cashman failed to bring in a new rotation arm as the trade deadline has now passed. Instead, the only move the Yankees made was a minor-league one, acquiring Rockies LHP Alfredo Garcia for RHP Joseph Harvey

With an hour left to go before the deadline, all signs were pointing to the Yanks missing out. Zack Wheeler talks weren't going well and Madison Bumgarner's name was virtually non-existent. Now the Yankees will continue to rely on who they got in their rotation and bullpen, hoping Dellin Betances and Luis Severino can return to help them with their World Series run.

July 31, 3:23 PM:

SNY's Andy Martino adds this on Zack Wheeler: "Yankees will take Wheeler if Mets will trade him there but it's not hopeful rn."

That sounds like the Mets don't seem willing to send Wheeler in a cab over to the Bronx. Martino says the Yankees have been working on it today, but they just are not thinking Brodie Van Wagenen will give a valuable asset to his crosstown rival

July 31, 1:55 PM:

According to USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale, talks between the Yankees and Diamondbacks on Robbie Ray "are now dead." The Yanks have been on Ray's radar for some time, but with just a little more than two hours left until the deadline, Ray seems to be another pitcher crossed off the list.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported that the D-Backs were asking for Clint Frazier and three prospects for Ray, which turned the Yankees off (as it should've).

The two prominent ones left are Giants' Madison Bumgarner and even Mets' Zack Wheeler. Whether or not Brian Cashman makes a deal for one of them is to be seen, but he must do so quickly.

July 31, 10:59 AM:

In their search for a starting pitcher, the Astros are focused on Zack Wheeler and Robbie Ray, reports Jon Morosi of MLB.com. The Yanks have been linked to both pitchers.

July 31, 10:32 AM:

The Yankees are talking to the Diamondbacks about Robbie Ray but are "so so" on him, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who adds that the Yankees' stance with Madison Bumgarner has been similar.

Martino adds that the Yankees have spoken the Giants about Bumgarner but "won't go crazy" for him.

July 31, 10:00 AM:

"There are a lot of indications" that the Yankees will not trade for a starting pitcher before the deadline, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who adds that they could potentially trade for a reliever like Shane Greene.

Martino notes that some are not sure whether to believe the Yankees when they say the can stand pat, and says there are mixed opinions on whether they're in on a potential trade for Zack Wheeler.

Aside from Wheeler, other names on the market include Robbie Ray, Madison Bumgarner, and Mike Minor

July 30, 10:05 PM:

Another big name has reportedly come off the market.

Indians righty Trevor Bauer is on his way to the Cincinnati Reds as part of a three-team trade with the Padres, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Passan has also reported that Yasiel Puig is heading to Cleveland as part of the deal, while outfield prospect Taylor Trammell goes to San Diego. Meanwhile, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that Franmil Reyes and pitcher Logan Allen are heading to Cleveland.

SNY Insider Andy Martino had noted earlier in the day that a Bauer trade to the Reds could clear the way for a Zack Wheeler deal to the Astros, who have been working the phones for a starting pitcher.

Martino has also reported that the Yankees never got into serious talks with the Indians regarding Bauer, according to sources.

July 30, 7:48 PM:

The wheels continue to spin as the MLB trade deadline inches closer and closer. According to MLB.com's Jon Morosi, the Indians and Astros have been in communication about Trevor Bauer.

But there's another interested team in the mix that could shift the deadline's landscape. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Reds have recently been in contact with the Indians about Bauer. If the Reds were to land him and shock the baseball world, SNY Insider Andy Martino notes that the deal clears the way for the Astros to then go after Zack Wheeler

July 30 2:32 PM:

While the Astros have been strongly linked to the Mets' Zack Wheeler, they could pivot to Trevor Bauer, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who says Houston is more interested in Bauer than Giants ace Madison Bumgarner.

July 30, 9:45 AM:

The Yankees were said to have their eye on Diamondbacks LHP Robbie Ray, but SNY's Andy Martino is hearing the two sides are not close to a deal at this time.

Peter Gammons of The Athletic was being told that Clint Frazier could be involved in a trade with Arizona, but that doesn't seem to be coming to fruition at the moment. Archis Bradley, the D-Backs veteran reliever, was also mentioned in a potential package deal.

July 30, 8:51 AM:

Peter Gammons of The Athletic reports that he keeps hearing that Clint Frazier will eventually be traded to the Diamondbacks for Robbie Ray or Archie Bradley -- or that Frazier and more (not Deivi Garcia) could be headed there for Ray and Bradley.

According to SNY's Andy Martino, rivals who know Brian Cashman say he won't budge off his positions on value of available starters -- and that he will do nothing rather than overpay. Martino notes that Trevor Bauer might be the one guy he'll pay big for. Martino also notes that Cashman would rather trade Frazier than Garica.

July 30, 8:14 AM:

There has been doubt recently as to whether the Indians will pull the trigger and trade Trevor Bauer. If they do, one GM views the Yankees and Astros as the frontrunners to land him, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand

The Indians are 62-43 -- 2.0 games back in the AL Central and 3.0 games ahead of the A's for the first Wild Card spot in the American League. A trade of Bauer (under team control through next season) remains possible, though, due to Cleveland's desire to shed payroll heading into the 2020 season.

July 29, 4:14 PM:

The Astros and Brewers are "remain engaged" on Robbie Ray of the Diamondbacks, reports Jon Heyman.

The Yankees have been connected to Ray, who is under team control through the 2020 season.

In a dwindling market, Ray and Mike Minor could be the two most likely targets for the Yankees, though they are also interested in Mets right-handers Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard, as SNY's Andy Martino has reported.

July 29, 10:36 AM:

Trevor Bauer's antics on Sunday -- when he angrily fired the ball over the center field fence before being taken out of the game -- gives the Indians 'cover' to trade him, according to SNY's Andy Martino

Meanwhile, the Indians continue to evaluate potential trade scenarios regarding Bauer and haven't made a decision on whether to deal him, according to ESPN's Buster Olney

July 28: 7:58 PM:

One of the Yankees' starting pitching targets is now off the market, as Marcus Stroman appears to be headed to the Mets. With CC Sabathia headed to the IL, the team's need for another arm in the rotation is now higher than ever, but there's now one fewer option to fill that void.

July 28: 10:14 AM:

The Yankees and Houston Astros are two teams that "keep inquiring about" Cleveland Indians righty Trevor Bauer, according to Cleveland.com. The Indians lead the AL wild-card race, but could deal Bauer due to budgetary concerns in 2020.

July 27, 5:50 PM:

The Diamondbacks appear to be fully committed to selling at the deadline.

According to MLB.com's Jon Morosi, starters Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray, relievers Andrew Chafin, Archie Bradley and Greg Holland, and outfielders David Peralta and Jarrod Dyson all seem to be available, but Ray is the name to watch for the Yankees.

Morosi linked the Yankees and Ray earlier this week. The lefty is 9-6 with a 3.95 ERA on the season.

July 26: 11:04 PM:

Marcus Stroman remains a name to watch for the Yankees.

According to MLB.com's Jon Morosi, the Yankees and Blue Jays continue to have talks about the right-hander, though it's unclear if those talks are gaining any momentum.

July 26, 6:24 PM:

Brian Cashman told reporters prior to Friday's game that he'd be open to a deal with the Mets prior to Wednesday's deadline. He added that the only team he's not dealing with is the Red Sox. The last trade between the two AL East rivals came on July 31, 2014, when the Yankees picked up Stephen Drew in exchange for Kelly Johnson. The Mets and Yankees, meanwhile, have not executed a trade since Mike Stanton returned to the Bronx in 2004 after being dealt for Felix Heredia.

July 26, 1:47 PM:

Rival executives told SNY's Andy Martino that the Yankees have not been the strongest team in on Marcus Stroman to this point. Martino also notes that Rangers LHP Mike Minor is expected to get traded, but that the overall trade market is still slow.

July 25, 6:22 PM:

According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Blue Jays have told teams interested in Marcus Stroman that they may choose to extend Stroman's deal, rather than trading him at the deadline.

Martino also notes that this could just be a negotiation tactic, rather than a real possibility.

July 25, 11:31 AM:

The Yankees like Marcus Stroman and the Blue Jays like Yanks prospect Deivi Garcia, but that doesn't mean there will be a match, reports Jon Heyman.

According to Heyman, the belief is that the Yankees will only part with Garcia as part of a deal for Noah Syndergaard or a pitcher they value similarly.

July 24, 11:27 AM:

The Phillies have discussed a Trevor Bauer trade with the Indians, reports Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

With the Indians having gone 8-2 over their last 10 games and holding the first Wild Card spot in the American League, there has been growing skepticism that Bauer will get dealt. But the Indians are apparently at least willing to continue to discuss the possibility.

July 23, 9:28 PM:

The Yankees are among the teams to reach out to the Diamondbacks about Robbie Ray in recent days, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

Ray, a 27-year-old left-hander, is 9-6 this season with a 3.95 ERA. Posting a career record of 44-44 with a 4.03 ERA, Ray had his best pro season in 2015, when he went 15-5 with a 2.89 ERA while making the NL All-Star team.

July 23, 9:54 AM:

Yankees VP of baseball operations Tim Naehring attended Rangers LHP Mike Minor's two latest starts, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. However, Rosenthal notes that the chances of Minor winding up in the Bronx probably aren't high.

According to Rosenthal, Minor has the Yankees on his 10-team no-trade list. However, there are certain times when pitchers -- such as Madison Bumgarner -- put teams on their no-trade list in order to have leverage over potentially interested teams, not because they don't want to play for those teams.

The 31-year-old Minor is owed $9.5 million in 2020, after which he is eligible for free agency.

July 22, 2:56 PM:

While the Blue Jays are open to dealing with the Braves despite the presence of former GM Alex Anthopoulos, the Yankees and Astros are among the teams that might have a better chance than Atlanta to land Marcus Stroman, according to Jon Heyman

July 19, 5:34 PM:

The Yankees had a significant presence at Marcus Stroman's latest start, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

July 19, 12:52 PM:

Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner is not for sale yet, reports SNY's Andy Martino. If Bumgarner is made available, the Yankees are lukewarm -- but not out -- about acquiring him, notes Martino.
