The Mets have interest in signing free agent catcher James McCann. Here's the latest...

The Mets and McCann have engaged in extensive contract discussions this week, but remain unable to find common ground to an agreement, league sources told SNY's Andy Martino.
Per Martino, while a deal could still come together quickly, the two sides have not been able to agree on the exact value of the four-year deal McCann would get.
Complicating matters further, according to Martino, is the involvement of the Los Angeles Angels in the McCann sweepstakes, as well as the potential involvement of the Philadelphia Phillies.

As of the end of Wednesday, a deal remained close between McCann and the Mets, SNY's Andy Martino reported on Thursday..
Per Martino, while anything could fall apart, the negotiations were at the five-yard line on Wednesday night and it "won't take much" to get a deal done "soon."
Martino reported on Wednesday that the Mets had already expressed a willingness to give McCann four years, meaning the final haggling could easily be over the average annual value of the contract.
Dec. 9 6:19 p.m.
Multiple reports now indicate that the Los Angeles Angels remain involved in talks with McCann.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic echoed previous reports that the Angels are still in the mix for McCann, but that the "ball still appears to be in Mets' court."
Rosenthal adds that the catcher would likely need to take less money to play for L.A. compared to what the Mets could offer, unless the Angels choose to spend a decent amount at catcher when the team has other, more pressing needs.

The Mets have not been in on J.T. Realmuto's market while in talks with McCann, but could re-engage on Realmuto if they can't find "common ground" on salary for a four-year deal, reports SNY's Andy Martino.
Per Martino, while the Mets have had extensive conversations with McCann's camp and none at all with Realmuto's, they could pivot if McCann does not agree on terms.
The expectation is that Realmuto will receive a deal of five years or more in excess of $100 million, but it's not clear just how active his market will be.
Meanwhile, Robert Murray of FanSided has reported that the Angels are still in the mix for McCann as well. The Angels were one of the teams that MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported as a possible suitor for McCann in late November, and Heyman is again reporting that they remain engaged with the catcher.

The Mets have expressed a willingness to go to four years on McCann, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who notes that details are still being worked out and that "final haggling" could be about the exact length and terms of the deal.
Martino reported earlier Wednesday that the Mets' talks with McCann were serious.

The Mets have been in on McCann "for a bit" and he's their target over J.T. Realmuto, SNY's Andy Martino reported Thursday, adding that they are not yet close to a deal.
Meanwhile, Robert Murray reported that it's looking "increasingly likely" he'll wind up with a four-year deal.

The Mets and Yankees are among five teams expressing interest in McCann, per Jon Heyman.
According to Heyman, in addition to the Mets and Yankees, the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels, and Chicago White Sox are also interested, with the Philadelphia Phillies "believed" to be intrigued if they lose J.T. Realmuto.
