The Knicks and Landry Shamet have agreed to a deal that returns the veteran guard to New York after a two-month hiatus, his agent told SNY's Ian Begley on Sunday.
Head coach Tom Thibodeau described Shamet’s attributes as “good, solid veteran leadership, play multiple positions.”
“He’s been around, he’s played in big games, he knows how to play off people extremely well,” the head coach said before Monday's game against the Toronto Raptors. “The three-point shooting, he can handle the ball, play off the ball. The versatility with Cam [Payne] and Deuce [McBride], I think they fit well together. And he plays fast, I think that helps.”
Thibs also said Shamet, Payne and Mikal Bridges were all a part of Phoenix Suns teams that went deep into the playoffs and that is a “plus as well.”
In a corresponding move, the Knicks waived forward Matt Ryan.
Shamet originally signed with the Knicks on Sept. 14, but he was waived a month later after he dislocated his shoulder in a preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets.
The 27-year-old impressed with an average of 10.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists over 22.1 minutes in his four preseason appearances.
Shamet was expected to begin the season in the rotation, which is why New York decided to select him in the G League Draft so that he could continue his rehab with the organization.
Now that he's back, Begley notes that prominent Knicks people feel he can help bolster the bench unit.
