After a sensational rookie year and a strong second season, Giants RB Saquon Barkley is coming off two lost years.

Barkley missed most of the 2020 season after tearing his ACL and having surgery, and his 2021 season was marred by another injury (this time to his ankle) that hampered him further as he was trying to work back into top performance shape.

The result this season was Barkley very rarely looking like the version of himself who terrorized opposing defenses while he was at Penn State and carried that over into his first two NFL seasons.

And with Barkley set to enter the fifth and final season of his rookie contract, the Giants will soon have a decision to make on his long-term future.

As far as the 2022 season goes, new GM Joe Schoen is excited to see what Barkley can do.

"He was in the locker room yesterday, so I got to have a good conversation with him," Schoen told reporters on Wednesday. "I'm excited about Saquon.

"When he came out, he was a rare talent. I know he's had some injuries, and that comes with that position. We talked a little bit about where we may need to upgrade. I think if you upgrade the offensive line, that's gonna help Daniel (Jones) and it's gonna help Saquon."

In 13 games this season, Barkley rushed 162 times for 593 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 41 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

Speaking shortly before the season ended, Barkley said he was optimistic about the future.

"These moments, they’re gonna be laughable in the future. With everything," Barkley told Kim Jones of WFAN. "Whether it’s the critics that love to come out and try to kick you when you’re down, whether it’s the ACL, whether it’s the ankle, whatever it is, those moments are gonna be things that I’ma be able to laugh about, because I know that I’m built for this.

"It is what it is, but I’m built for this. And as the adversity keeps coming, obviously I’ma have my low days, but I’m always gonna try my best to keep a smile on my face and continue to work through it. That’s the only thing I can do, and that’s the only thing I know how to do."
