Ryan Griffin has been one of the biggest surprises on the Jets this season, and the team rewarded him on Saturday evening by signing the tight end to a multi-year extension.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has confirmed Griffin's extension is a three-year, $10.8 million deal, with $4 million guaranteed.

The Jets came into the season believing that Chris Herndon would be the team's number one tight end, but he started the season on the suspended list, opening the door for Griffin, whom the Jets signed this past July.

Originally a sixth round pick out of UConn in 2013, Griffin spent his first six seasons with the Texans, starting 36 games while catching 136 passes for 1,491 yards and seven touchdowns.

In his first season with the Jets, Griffin has proven to be one of Sam Darnold's favorite targets, catching 25 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns. The 29-year-old had a breakout game against the Redskins last week, grabbing five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.

"I didn't know much about him before we picked him up, then we got him and right when he got in here, I knew the kind of guy he was first and foremost," Darnold said of Griffin this week. "I knew he was going to work hard, do all the right things off the field and then once he got on the field, I knew we had a special guy in this locker room and special player. So, he's been awesome for us and he's looking to have another big game this weekend."

Griffin was set to become a free agent after this season.
