The Jets made a a string of roster move on Saturday, less than 24 hours before their season finale against the Buffalo Bills.
Gang Green claimed tight end Ross Travis off of waivers from the Indianapolis Colts, placing guard Alex Lewis on Inured Reserve to make room on the active roster.
Additionally, the Jets placed offensive lineman Tom Compton on IR and promoted fellow O-lineman Ben Braden from the practice squad. Both Lewis and Compton had already been ruled out for Sunday by the team.
Travis, listed at 6-foot-6, 248 pounds, was originally an undrafted free agent signing of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015, but his path to the NFL was an unorthodox one. Ross didn't play any football during his days at Penn State, but he was a starter on the Nittany Lions men's basketball team.
The Chiefs took a shot on Travis following the 2015 draft, hoping his athleticism would translate to the gridiron. He bounced back and forth between the Chiefs' active roster and practice squad for a couple of seasons, until he was claimed off waivers by the Colts in November 2017. Overall, Travis has appeared in 24 games during his career, catching 14 passes for 142 yards.
Without knowing the Jets' offense, Travis likely won't suit up for finale in Buffalo, but the team will have a chance to get an up-close look at him heading into the offseason, as he's set to become a restricted free agent.
Lewis was traded to the Jets this past offseason from the Baltimore Ravens, and he's proven to be a valuable piece of the team's offensive line since becoming a starter in Week 5. An ankle injury has ended his first season in New York one game early.
