Why are the Jets starting Joe Flacco over Mike White? - @NoahN2020

Flacco is a bit of a sore subject this week, so don’t shoot the messenger with this one: The Jets simply don’t believe Flacco was the root of their problems against Baltimore.

The Jets were surprised at how much left tackle George Fant and left guard Laken Tomlinson struggled in the opener. Actually, the team was most nervous about rookie Max Mitchell on the right side, and he graded out as their best performer. Those continued breakdowns on the left side ruined any chance for offensive success. Basically, Flacco had no shot against the Ravens because he had someone in his face virtually every time he dropped back.

If White was a mobile quarterback, maybe the Jets would be more inclined to go to him because he could avoid said rushes. But White, like Flacco, is a pretty stationary quarterback. He has slightly more mobility, but Flacco’s ability and experience (there’s a reason he’s ahead of White on the depth chart), warrant him remaining their starter — for now. His leash is undeniably shorter as the Jets leave for Cleveland. I could see New York making a halftime switch if the offense continues to struggle.

But the Jets genuinely believe Flacco’s play will improve if they can shore up their offensive line.

Yes. The Jets believe they have an absolute star on their hands in Wilson. They’re more than willing to deal with the mental errors by playing him through his development because of what he can do. That near third-down conversion he had evading what felt like half the Ravens defense? That’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The reason Wilson wasn’t involved more early was because the Jets wanted to feature their two tight ends — it was their game plan. That will not be the case moving forward. Keeping Wilson on the field, from my understanding, was a major talking point inside One Jets Drive in the days following their loss to Baltimore.

Not in the first round — no. Not as long as Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh are here. The only way the Jets are picking a quarterback that early again is if they have a new coach and general manager. That’s the worst of all worst-case scenarios.

Any situation that involves Wilson not being the Jets’ answer should be pushed far, far from the mind of Jets fans. For those that want to think doom and gloom, though, this is one I could see playing out: Jimmy Garoppolo.

He knows the offense and has more than a few fans in the Jets’ building. The Jets could sign him, then have him compete with Wilson in training camp next year.
