When the Jets selected Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, they wanted the former USC star to develop into their franchise quarterback. Ahead of Darnold's third season in the NFL, wide receiver Breshad Perriman is a fan.

Formerly with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019), Cleveland Browns (2018) and Baltimore Ravens (2016-17), Perriman signed a one-year Jets deal for $6.5 million in 2020. Through the early work with Darnold as his quarterback, he had a glowing review.

"I feel like Sam is great, man," Perriman said Sunday. "His throwing ability is crazy. I love the way he throws the ball. The touch on the ball is unreal, so receiver friendly.

"And just the whole way, his personality and the way he's able to take control of the room and offense and the team, it's just crazy. Him being so reserved and laid back and still having that authority, when it's time to go out there and let the bullets fly, he can take control over the room.

"I just like the whole way of how he is. And him as a quarterback -- man, it's a receiver's dream."

The 23-year-old Darnold is 11-15 through 26 starts in two seasons from 2018-19. He has completed 512 of 855 passes (59.9 percent) for 5,889 yards and 36 touchdowns to 28 interceptions.

His second year in 2019 saw him go 7-6, completing 273 of 441 passes (61.9 percent) for 3,024 yards and 19 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.

Darnold posted a 4-9 record as the Jets' rookie starter in 2018, going 239 of 414 (57.7 percent) with 2,865 yards and 17 touchdowns to 15 interceptions through 13 starts.

Perriman, who turns 26 on Sept. 10, was the 2015 NFL Draft's No. 26 overall pick out of Central Florida. In 27 games (four starts) with the Ravens from 2016-17, Perriman caught 43 passes for 576 yards (13.4 average) and three touchdowns.

He spent his 2018 season with the Browns, making 16 catches for 340 yards (21.3 average) and two touchdowns in 10 games (two starts). Perriman's breakthrough came with the Bucs in 2019, recording a career-high 36 receptions for 645 yards (17.9 average) and six touchdowns.
