The Jets welcomed the Washington Commanders to town for a joint practice on Thursday morning, but some uninvited soggy weather forced quarterback Aaron Rodgers out of the action.

Head coach Robert Saleh decided to sit Rodgers out of Thursday’s practice due to the rainy conditions around Florham Park, taking the cautious route with the veteran quarterback.

"Woke up this morning and saw the weather, he's taken every rep in practice so I just felt like it was unnecessary with the heightened environment, unfamiliar foes in terms of taking care of one another, I just didn't want to expose him to it," Saleh said.

"He pushed back and he wanted to go, but in the grand scheme of things with regards to Week 1, we've got a long ways to go for that and he'll have other opportunities coming up."

Saleh went on to confirm that this approach will have nothing to do with how Gang Green handles the star quarterback moving forward for the remainder of the preseason.

It's already been confirmed that him and the rest of the starters will sit out this weekends opener at MetLife Stadium against the Commanders, but the head coach says there's a chance we'll see him before the regular season.

"We've had preliminary discussions but nothing is finalized," Saleh said. "The third game is when we usually like to play our guys, so depending on how Saturday goes and next week against the Panthers then the following week with the Giants, I'll make that decision."

For now, though, Rodgers will remain limited to just practice work but Saleh says him and the coaching staff are happy with what they've seen from him in return to the field.

"I think he's in a great space," the head coach said. "He's in a great spot mentally and his arm looks like he's 30, so he's chomping at the bit, and he looks like he's ready to roll."
