Only a select few starters will suit up for the Jets against the Eagles on Thursday night - and those are probably ones who have yet to play much this summer.

For everyone else, including quarterback Sam Darnold, the preseason is over. For some, like running back Le'Veon Bell, it never really began.

The finale is all about the backups and the dozens of players fighting to make the final roster. Who will make it and who won't? Here's a pregame look at the Jets' projected 53-man roster, which could change considerably depending on how their game against the Eagles goes:

QUARTERBACKS (3): Sam Darnold, Trevor Siemian, Luke Falk

Webb, who was once thought to be Eli Manning's heir apparent with the Giants, will be playing for his career on Thursday night. Falk, who was with new Jets coach Adam Gase in Miami last year and knows his offense, has the clear inside track for the third-string job.

RUNNING BACKS (4): Le'Veon Bell, Ty Montgomery, Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon

With Cannon securing his spot on special teams, the real battle is McGuire vs. veteran Bilal Powell. There's value in keeping a veteran around, but Powell is 30 and his body has been battered. Bet on Gase sticking with the fresh legs.

TIGHT ENDS (3): Eric Tomlinson, Trevon Wesco, Daniel Brown

Without the suspended Chris Herndon there's not a lot here. The Jets like Wesco and he could push Tomlinson for the blocking tight end role at some point, but not yet and not with their ranks depleted.

WIDE RECEIVERS (7): Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder, Quincy Enunwa, Josh Bellamy, Deontay Burnett, Deonte Thompson, Greg Dortch

They'll keep the veteran Thompson over the disappointing Charone Peake, because Dortch has supplanted Peake on special teams. The receiving corps is really a three-man unit for the Jets, but don't be surprised to see Burnett push his way into playing time in four-receiver sets.

OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Kelvin Beachum, Kelechi Osemele, Ryan Kalil, Brian Winters, Brandon Shell, Jonathan Harrison, Alex Lewis, Chuma Edoga, Tom Compton

For most of the summer the Jets have been without their three starters in the middle, so they need to carry extra bodies with experience. That's why they traded for Lewis and will keep Compton and Harrison, too.

DEFENSIVE LINE: (7): Leonard Williams, Steve McLendon, Henry Anderson, Quinnen Williams, Nathan Shepherd, Bronson Kaufusi, Folorunso Fatukasi

New defensive coordinator Gregg Williams wants a heavy rotation up front, and it's a good bet he'll be running a lot more 4-3 than 3-4, which means he needs more bodies. That's how Fatukasi gets off the bubble and onto the team.

LINEBACKERS (7): Jordan Jenkins, Neville Hewitt, C.J. Mosley, Frankie Luvu, Blake Cashman, Jachai Polite, Anthony Wint

The injury to Avery Williamson and the suspension of Brandon Copeland opens a couple of doors here. That also probably keeps them from a real tough decision on Polite, a third-round pick who has done little this summer.

CORNERBACKS (6): Trumaine Johnson, Darryl Roberts, Brian Poole, Parry Nickerson, Tevaughn Campbell, Nate Hairston

This spot is very likely to be upended in the days after the final cuts -- maybe even before, since GM Joe Douglas is open to trades, like the one he made on Wednesday to acquire Hairston from the Colts. The Jets know cornerback is a weakness. Other than Johnson, Roberts, Poole and now Hairston, anyone else who makes the roster on Saturday shouldn't unpack.

SAFETIES (4): Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, Rontez Miles, Doug Middleton

With Maye just coming back from injury, it closes a door for Brandon Bryant. Because of Maye's injury history, the Jets will want veterans like Miles and Middleton behind him.

SPECIALISTS (3): K Taylor Bertolet, P Lachlan Edwards, LS Thomas Hennessey

The Jets didn't bring in competition for Bertlolet, even after he struggled. That's a huge statement. And he responded with a strong game on Saturday night. He still needs another one, though. He can't give the Jets an excuse to bring in someone else, because they don't need much.
