The Islanders have traded away the rights to retired defenseman Johnny Boychuk to the Buffalo Sabres for future considerations.
This move comes on the heels of the Sabres making a blockbuster trade earlier Thursday, sending Jack Eichel and a conditional pick to the Vegas Golden Knights for Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs and two conditional picks.
Taking Boychuk’s $6 million cap hit, the Sabres likely made the deal to stay above the NHL’s salary floor after the Eichel trade.
The 37-year-old called it a career in November of 2020 after sustaining an eye injury that March, which required 90 stitches to his eyelid.
In six seasons with the Islanders, Boychuk logged 404 games, tallying 35 goals and 96 assists for a total of 131 points.
