Shortly after the Rangers announced Wednesday morning that they had bought out Henrik Lundqvist, ending his career on Broadway, the 38-year-old took to Twitter to thank the fans and organization.

"THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! 15 years ago, I played my first game for @NYRangers I came here with high hopes and big dreams but in my wildest imagination, I could never have pictured the amazing ride that lay ahead," Lundqvist wrote. "Representing this organization has been the biggest source of pride and joy in my life. I’m so grateful for the opportunity, for the friendships and for all the great memories created wearing the red, white and blue.

"I will always cherish my time as a Ranger. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!"

The writing had been on the wall since the middle of last season regarding Lundqvist, whose time in net was sliced dramatically during the 2019-20 season as Alexandar Georgiev and Igor Shesterkin started most games.

Lundqvist, who has the most wins and shutouts in Rangers franchise history, was a stalwart in goal from the 2005-06 season to 2018-19.

He was also tremendous in the playoffs, falling just short a few times of helping to lead the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup title since 1993-94.

Lundqvist's Rangers lost in five games to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final in 2013-14 and lost in the Conference Finals to the New Jersey Devils in 2011-12 (in six games) and Tampa Bay Lightning in 2014-15 (in seven games). Those seasons were the closest Lundqvist got to hoisting the cup.
