The Rangers officially have a new captain.

J.T. Miller was named the 29th captain in franchise history ahead of training camp getting underway this week.

He replaces D Jacob Trouba, who served in the role for about three seasons before being shipped off in a deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

The organization cast a wide net of candidates from the current leadership group, but GM Chris Drury broke down the decision to land on Miller while speaking with reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

“Certainly a very exciting day for us, the organization, and J.T. and his family,” Drury said. “We thought it was a perfect time to do it right before the start of camp and didn’t really have any interest in starting camp without a captain.

“Where this team is at, I thought it was an important role -- for us and the process we went through, if we didn’t have the right person, we weren’t just going to name anybody just to say we have a ‘C.’ We have a lot of good choices and J.T. rose to the top.”

Miller, of course, was reacquired ahead of last year’s trade deadline in a deal with the Vancouver Canucks with hopes of helping change the culture around the struggling club.

New York ultimately fell short of the postseason, but the All-Star did enjoy a strong return, as he finished with 13 goals, 22 assists, and 76 hits across the final 32 games of the season.

The offensive production is huge for New York’s top-six, but it’s the physical style of play that they like to see Miller rubbing off on his teammates.

“The way he prepares, the way he plays, just how hard he competes,” Drury said. “He goes over the boards looking to get into a fight and drags people into it, that’s what we need and we’re excited to have him as our captain.”
