Giants WR Corey Coleman tears ACL in practice

Injury happened same day Sterling Shepard fractured thumb

Training camp just started and the Giants wide receivers are dropping like flies.

The team announced on Friday that in addition to Sterling Shepard fracturing his thumb in Thursday's practice, receiver Corey Coleman sustained an ACL tear and is likely out for the season.

Coleman, 25, played in eight games with the Giants last year and finished with five catches for 71 yards. He was expected to take on a larger role in the Giants offense this season as the No. 3 wide receiver on the depth chart.

Coleman's teammate, Golden Tate, said that the receiver was complaining of a sore knee early in Thursday's practice but stayed in and ran routes.

"I was watching film, saw him run a great post-route and I thought to myself, 'That guy had a torn ACL?'" Tate said.

The Giants wide receiver corps. is suddenly depleted with Shepard still week-to-week and rookie speedster Darius Slayton battling a hamstring injury. WR Brittan Golden, whom the Giants signed to a reserves/futures contract at the end of last year, also had to come out of Friday's practice with an apparent groin injury after getting tangled up with defensive back Antonio Hamilton in the end zone.

The other wide receivers at training camp include Golden Tate, Cody Latimer, Russell Shepard, Bennie Fowler, Alonzo Russell, Da'Mari Scott, and Reggie White Jr.

Head coach Pat Shurmur was optimistic about Shepard, though, explaining that he will not need surgery and will "be back soon."

"I'm not concerned at all," Shurmur said about Shepard, adding that it could be something Shepard can play through.

Coleman is a former first-round pick, selected 15th overall by the Browns in the 2016 draft. He was cut by the Browns prior to the 2018 season.
