Giants Takeaways from Joe Judge and Corey Ballentine, including Daniel Jones taking hits at practice

Ballentine "not necessarily surprised" he could be a starting CB this year

The Giants had a late practice on Tuesday and also had to deal with some inclement weather moving the team around a bit, but new head coach Joe Judge's intense training camp continued on anyway.

After practice, Judge and Corey Ballentine spoke with reporters over Zoom.

Here are a few takeaways from the duo.

Joe Judge on Daniel Jones taking hits

The Giants' Week 1 matchup with the Steelers is about three weeks away, and with no preseason football this year, that'll be there first time seeing opponents since last year.

Up until now, Daniel Jones has been wearing his protective red jersey through practices, but it looks like the second-year QB is due for some hits very soon, Judge said Tuesday.

"With quarterbacks, you want to go ahead and be calculated about when you start banging them around," Judge said. "I don't think we're going to throw him into any Royal Rumbles or anything like that, but at some point we'll pop his pads in and in a controlled environment."

"I'm not in a hurry to just go and beat the hell out of him, but at some point we'll prepare his body for what he may take in that first game."

Corey Ballentine on potentially starting this year

The Giants will be without two key pieces of their secondary this season and will likely need to look for someone to make the step up into a bigger role.

With Sam Beal opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and DeAndre Baker not with the team after being charged with four counts of armed robbery this summer, the Giants are looking slim at CB.

Corey Ballentine, a sixth-round pick by the Giants just last season, could very well be in the starting lineup at one of the CB spots come Week 1. But that doesn't seem to surprise him.

"I'm just kind of going with it, I'm happy to play wherever they want me to play, wherever I'm needed," Ballentine said on a Zoom call Tuesday night.

"...I'm still trying to grow as a player myself and just be the best I can be, so I'm not too concerned or worried about the depth chart or anything else. ...As long as I'm on the field, I don't think it really matters. I'm glad to have the opportunity to be out there."

On his preparedness for the season

Ballentine appeared in 13 games and started two for the Giants in 2019, finishing the year with 26 total tackles and two passes defended. He also returned 10 kicks for New York at different points throughout the year.

"I like where I'm at mentally, I like where I'm at physically...I went through last year so I knew what to expect going into training camp, so I prepared myself in the offseason for that," Ballentine said on his preparation for 2020. "...I feel like I'm thinking a little bit less and I'm just going out there and playing, which is good for me."
