Giants WR Sterling Shepard took a big step forward on Monday, returning to practice for the first time since his concussion symptoms (stemming from his second concussion of the season) returned.

While Shepard was back at practice, he is still technically in concussion protocol, head coach Pat Shurmur said.

Shepard was back on the field along with Janoris Jenkins, but Evan Engram (out of his walking boot, making progress toward a potential return) remained out.

After suffering his second concussion of the season, Shepard was initially cleared and expected to return against the Jets last week. However, he began experiencing symptoms again in the days leading up to the game, informed the team, and was placed back in concussion protocol.

While he didn't practice last week in advance of the Giants' bye week, Shepard did take the field in a helmet and pads on Thursday, stretched and tossed the football around with his teammates.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported last Wednesday that the team was considering placing Shepard on season-ending IR, but noted that any potential decision was likely a "long way" off.

Shepard suffered his second concussion of the season in Week 5 against the Vikings after suffering his first during Week 1.
