David Mayo's first season in New York was the best of his pro career, and the Giants have awarded the linebacker with a new contract.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has confirmed that Mayo and the Giants have agreed to a new three-year contract, just before the 26-year-old was set to hit the open market as a free agent. The initial report came from The Athletic's Dan Duggan,

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mayo's new deal is worth $8.4 million.

Originally a fifth-round pick out of Texas State in 2015, Mayo spent his first four pro seasons with the Carolina Panthers, and while he appeared in 59 games, he started just four of those. He then signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers last March, but was waived by the team after the preseason.

After signing with the Giants, Mayo was initially thought of as a depth piece, but with other injuries in the linebackers room, Mayo was forced into action, and he played well. He started 13 games for Big Blue, recording 2.0 sacks, recovering one fumble, and racking up 82 combined tackles.

The Giants could still add to the linebacker spot via free agency, with Los Angeles' Cory Littleton the biggest name on the market, but Mayo, at the very least, gives them some solid linebacker depth, something the team has lacked for years.
