While the Giants and Leonard Williams have never been close to agreeing to a contract extension, New York has not given up on the idea of signing him to long-term deal after the 2020 season if Williams has a big year, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported on Monday.
Vacchiano reported on June 30 that while Giants GM Dave Gettleman is "all in" on Williams after last season's controversial midseason trade -- when they sent a third-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick to the Jets for him at the deadline -- the belief is that not everyone else in the organization is.
The Giants placed the franchise tag on the 26-year-old Williams earlier this offseason after trying and failing to sign him long-term.
Williams played in eight games for the Giants after being acquired last season, starting five of them. In those eight games, he had 0.5 sacks, one forced fumble, 26 total tackles, and two passes defended.
In his eight games last season with the Jets, Williams did not record a sack. He had 5.0 sacks in 2018.
As Vacchiano has noted, it remains unclear how Williams will fit in with what the Giants do defensively under new head coach Joe Judge and new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
