The Mets' week was highlighted by Jacob deGrom's complete-game effort against the rival Phillies as his season for the ages rolls on. The right-hander allowed one run on seven hits while striking out nine, all while having to sit out a rain delay (which obviously didn't deter him). He needed 99 pitches only and walked none. His ERA now sits at 1.71 but he has only eight wins to show for it. Following the game, New York's skipper Mickey Callaway and the staff ace discussed the righty's chances at winning the 2018 Cy Young Award.
The other big news item for the Mets was David Wright's sudden rehab assignment at Port St. Lucie. The veteran appeared in game action for the first time in almost a year and recorded his first hits Sunday.
The Mets also set the franchise record for most runs scored in a two-day span by abusing the Orioles and Phillies for a combined 40 runs between Aug. 15 and Aug. 16. Jose Bautista had eight RBIs in that span. Finally, Jason Vargas and Amed Rosario led the Mets to an 8-2 win over the Phillies in Sunday's Little League Classic.
The Yankees' week started off poorly with news that a stabilizing force in their starting rotation was set to miss some time. Veteran CC Sabathia was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a knee injury Monday, with right-hander George Kontos recalled from Triple-A. Meanwhile, J.A. Happ has been in stellar form since joining the Yankees, providing a much-needed boost for skipper Aaron Boone and the Bombers' bullpen to boot. Also on the injury front, Boone said that Aaron Judge still has yet to swing a bat as he works his way back from a fracture in his wrist. The Yankees got good news involving Gary Sanchez, however, as it was revealed that the catcher will likely begin a rehab assignment this week. Sanchez has been out since late July with a nagging groin injury which has been a recurring problem for him. Therefore, the Bombers are playing it safe with the young slugger and not rushing anything in terms of a full-time return to action (even though his production has been sorely missed). Unfortunately, the week ended with another piece of bad news for the Yanks, as Didi Gregorius departed Sunday's game in the first inning after bruising his left heel in a collision at first base.

The Jets' intriguing quarterback situation continues to evolve as Teddy Bridgewater had another impressive showing in Gang Green's most recent preseason game. Ralph Vacchiano opines that the former Viking is now perfect trade bait for the Jets, given how strong rookie quarterback Sam Darnold has looked in first-team reps. In other news, head coach Todd Bowles shot back at Terrelle Pryor about his ankle injury in the offseason, and new kicker Cairo Santos has been sidelined with a chronic groin injury, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. Taylor Bertolet has been the primary kicker of late.
The Giants' week started with some bad news as rookie running back Saquon Barkley left practice Monday with a mild hamstring strain. Head coach Pat Shurmur said New York will be cautious with Barkley and the team has him listed as day-to-day in their most recent update. Meanwhile, Davis Webb showed vast improvement by helping lead the Giants to their first preseason win Saturday. The G-Men beat the Lions, 30-17, as Webb completed 14 of 20 passes for 140 yards.
NBA
The Knicks had a slow news week. It was revealed that former Knick Carmelo Anthony will likely come off the bench for the Houston Rockets during the upcoming season. ESPN came out with its season predictions and the media giant projected the Knicks to be at the bottom of the heap at T-13. Across the East River, the main Nets news from last week was the guaranteeing of Spencer Dinwiddie's $1.65 million salary for the upcoming season. He averaged a career-high 12.6 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game last year.

The Rangers' head coach David Quinn is in no rush to name a team captain as he gets to know his new squad better ahead of the season opener against the Predators on Oct. 4. Henrik Lundqvist met with Quinn for the first time recently and came away from the meeting highly impressed. The team leader said he wants to be part of the Rangers' "next run." Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello reinforced his faith in plans for the team's new arena at Belmont Park. The arena is not expected to be ready for several years and the Isles will be playing some of their home games at the recently-renovated Nassau Coliseum.
MLS
NYCFC played its second straight road match and was blanked, 2-0, by the Union in Chester, Pennsylvania. Domènec Torrent took out David Villa in the 53rd minute, and Philadelphia score a brace late. Daniel Royer scored twice for the Red Bulls in their weekend match and New York came away with a 2-2 tie against the Whitecaps.

As for UConn, one of the biggest rivalries in the history of women's basketball is set to return for the upcoming season, as it was announced that the University of Tennessee will resume a series with the Huskies beginning in 2019-20. As part of the two-year agreement, UConn will host the Vols next year, and Tennessee will host the Huskies the following year. Game dates are TBA.
