The NFL will be removing two weeks from the 2020 preseason schedule, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed on Wednesday.

Weeks 1 and 4 will no longer take place on each team's schedule. For the Jets and Giants, that would mean their Week 1 bout against each other at MetLife Stadium would be canceled. Gang Green was also set to face the Eagles in Week 4, while Big Blue had the Patriots on their schedule.

However, Vacchiano is saying that New York matchup might not be dead just yet.

One of the main reasons the NFL is making this change is due to travel. Some teams don't want to travel too far with their large rosters while the coronavirus pandemic continues to be a big issue. The other reason is coaches want more time practicing with their players instead of playing games because of the missed time from canceled OTAs and minicamps.

For Week 2, the Jets and Giants are both on the road, traveling to Detroit and Nashville respectively. Wouldn't it make more sense to stay in the same region and still keep that New York battle on the schedule for one of the weeks? Even the Week 4 matchups in Philadelphia and New England are closer sites than playing the Lions and Titans on the road.

That's why one source told Vacchiano Weeks 2 and 3 might not be set in stone as the schedule currently says, with a "reshuffling" going on behind the scenes. The source added "it was like a big jigsaw puzzle" figuring out how to make this all work seamlessly.

Each team is expected to have one home and one away game on their schedule, and going based off that information, it wouldn't be possible to keep the current preseason matchups as is. So there is bound to be some changes.

An official announcement will be coming from the league by the end of the week, so we'll learn for sure who the Jets and Giants will be playing before the regular season kicks off in September.
