Mets closer Edwin Diaz is set to become a free agent after the season, but he's not ready for his time in New York to end.

"I would love to stay," Diaz told The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Monday during All-Star Game media day.

Diaz, who is making $10.2 million in 2022 during what is his final year of arbitration, is having his best season as a Met and has been arguably the best closer in baseball this season.

In 38 games over 37.1 innings, Diaz has a 1.69 ERA (1.18 FIP) and 0.99 WHIP with an eye-popping 75 strikeouts -- good for 18.1 strikeouts per nine.

In two and a half seasons with the Mets following a tough debut season in 2019, Diaz has posted a 2.58 ERA (2.04 FIP) and 1.07 WHIP with 214 strikeouts in 125.2 innings (15.3 K's per 9).

Along with Diaz, the Mets have a bunch of other key players who are set for free agency, including Brandon Nimmo and Chris Bassitt (who is all but certain to decline his mutual option for 2023). Some of Diaz's bullpen mates, including Adam Ottavino, Seth Lugo, and Trevor May, will also be free agents after this season.

Meanwhile, Jacob deGrom -- who has two years remaining on his contract beyond 2022 -- has an opt-out he can trigger after the season and is on record that he will exercise it.
