The Mets were officially eliminated from playoff contention after their 4-3 loss in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Washington Nationals.

After a 5-3 loss in the second game of the day, Dominic Smith reflected on the 2020 Mets and why they didn't live up to season expectations.

"We fought hard, we fought until the last pitch, even tonight," Smith said. "Obviously, we weren't able to overcome certain circumstances. It just shows the character of the group. We never gave up, we never gave away games, and we competed until the last out."

Smith took a hard hit running into the wall during Game 1, as he wasn't able to field the ball and it resulted in an inside-the-park home run. Smith appeared to be shaken up, but after being evaluated, he stayed in the game.

"There was no way any of those managers or coaches, staff was going to pull me out of that game," Smith said. "I felt perfectly fine, I was ready to go. Baseball is a tough sport, and sometimes people forget that. That's just me reminding them that we're out here, we're grown men, and we play hard.

"I don't want you guys to speculate on if I should have been taken out. They gave me the concussion test, and I was fine. That's just something I decided to stay in the game, because I wanted to help the team win."

2019 NL Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso hasn't had the best year at the plate, as he batted just .222 in 203 at-bats with 14 home runs and 32 RBI. He reflected on the season overall, and wished for more games for the team to put it all together.

"I wish we had a hundred more," Alonso said. "I feel like this team is built to win. We have just a ridiculous amount of talent. It's unfortunate we couldn't put it together within the sixty game timespan.

"In a regular season, this is just the beginning... It's a strange year, but there's no excuses... It's frustrating not playing baseball past tomorrow."
