The Devils are going to be shorthanded on the backend down the stretch.

Jonas Siegenthaler is set to miss the rest of the season and Dougie Hamilton will be sidelined for an extended period, GM Tom Fitzgerald told reporters following Friday’s trade deadline.

Siegenthaler was shifted to long-term injured reserve earlier this week after missing seven games due to a lower-body injury he suffered while skating through the neutral zone during an early Feb. game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Prior to the injury, the 27-year-old logged the second-most minutes among New Jersey defensemen this season.

Hamilton’s lower-body injury occurred just one day after the Devils lost Jack Hughes for the season, when his right ankle was caught up and twisted awkwardly against the boards by Dallas’ Mason Marchment late in the first period.

He was initially labeled as week-to-week, and will now be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

The 31-year-old missed the majority of last season due injury, but he’s been able to return to his usual productive form on the backend this year, producing nine goals and 31 assists in 63 games.

The Devils added depth defenseman Dennis Cholowski ahead of the deadline.
