For the first time since the 2001 amateur draft, franchise icon David Wright does not work for the Mets, but there is mutual interest in a return.
Flying under the radar during a dramatic winter for the team, Wright’s agreement to serve as a special advisor to former COO Jeff Wilpon and former GM Brodie Van Wagenen expired. He is not currently affiliated with the team in any capacity.
That could quickly change. The sides did not part in any kind of acrimonious way. Wright’s contract merely expired. Wright and team president Sandy Alderson have always enjoyed a strong relationship and expressed mutual respect.
There has, in fact, been dialogue this winter about bringing Wright back to the fold. Wright is said to be willing to return, albeit in a part-time capacity. Alderson would almost certainly be happy to have him.
