Rangers forward Chris Kreider has been named the recipient of the first annual Rod Gilbert “Mr. Ranger” Award, the team announced on Wednesday.

The award, named after Rangers legend Rod Gilbert, is given to the Rangers player "who best honors Rod's legacy by exemplifying leadership qualities both on and off the ice, and making a significant humanitarian contribution to his community."

“I’d like to congratulate Chris on being the inaugural winner of the Rod Gilbert “Mr. Ranger” Award,” Rangers President and GM Chris Drury said. “Since he made his debut with the Rangers a decade ago, Chris has consistently and willingly devoted his time and efforts to charitable endeavors, especially through the Garden of Dreams Foundation. Chris’ contributions in the community exemplify the kindness and generosity that Rod demonstrated throughout his life.”

Kreider’s work with the Garden of Dreams Foundation during his time in New York has impacted a number of children and their families and the relationships he’s formed with them continues to this day.

The 19th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, Kreider’s generosity and devotion also extends to Hockey Fights Cancer, Hockey is for Everyone, Season of Giving, and Essential Workers Night, hosted by the Rangers at Madison Square Garden this season.

Kreider has also developed a relationship with the Southern Connecticut Storm Special Hockey program through the years and makes appearances at team practices every so often.

In his 10th season with the Blueshirts, the 30-year-old has put together a career season. His 52 goals this year are tied for the second most in a single season in franchise history, while his 26 power-play goals and 11 game-winning goals are a new franchise record.
