New Rangers assistant coach David Oliver was a 7th round pick of the Edmonton OIlers in 1991 and after playing four years at the University of Michigan, he played half a season for the Oilers in 1994-95.
Oliver then spent the next season and part of another with the Oilers before joining the Rangers for 14 regular season and 3 playoff games at the end of the 1996-97 season.
Edmonton's GM throughout Oliver's entire time in the Oilers organization was current Rangers President Glen Sather.
The Rangers claimed Oliver on waivers from the Oilers on February 22, 1997 and played his first game for the Rangers the next night against Philly.
Oliver played in that game against Philly as a replacement for Vladimir Vorobiev, who was in the lineup himself as a replacement for an injured Alex Kovalev.
In his next appearance, against the Red Wings on 3/1, Oliver at one point skated on a line with Wayne Gretzky and Adam Graves.
Oliver scored his first goal with the Rangers while converting a 2 on 1 feed from Mark Messier in a 6-2 win over LA.
He scored his second goal with the Rangers in a 5-4 win over Boston on April 3.
In the playoffs, Oliver played one game in each round for the Rangers.
Oliver was released by the Rangers in August of 1997 and spent the next 10 or so years playing in multiple leagues, including a few times in the NHL.
Overall, Oliver played 14 regular season games with the Rangers, had 2 goals, 1 assist and 4 PIM. He played in three playoff games without registering much on the score sheet.
