The Yankees fell to the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 in 11 innings on Friday night, but it wasn’t for a lack of opportunities.

As a team, the Yankees were just 2-for-11 (.182) with runners in scoring position, and while the Orioles were even more putrid (1-for-15), the overall difference in talent tells you that this is a game that Yankees simply should have won.

The Yankees failed to score their free runners in the 10th and 11th innings, ultimately leading to Aroldis Chapman walking in the game-winning run.

But after the game, manager Aaron Boone said that it’s too early to call the Yankees’ RISP woes a trend, despite the fact that it also plagued the 2021 team.

"It's fair to say that about last year," Boone said. "Let's check back with us. We'll be fine. If we got a third hit, then it's a great night. So bottom line is one run is not going to get it done, we've got to do better than that and we've got to get after it and come out and put together some better ABs tomorrow."

And the newness of this season isn’t the only reason why Boone believes the Yankees are poised to be better at driving in runners in scoring position compared to last year’s group. The Yankees skipper also believes this year’s roster is an improvement from last season.

"I just think we're better, I think we're better overall and that's going to manifest itself," Boone said. "I don't think -- obviously, we want to be better than 2-for-11, but that wasn't the problem tonight. We didn't get enough anything tonight. It's, whatever -- 11 innings, seven hits, maybe. I don't know how many walks we had.

“So, it was just we didn't have a very good offensive night, and that's what we've got to turn the page from. I'm confident in our guys that we will get it rolling and, hopefully, that starts tomorrow."

Friday’s loss evens the Yankees’ record at 4-4, a game back of the Toronto Blue Jays. For the Orioles, the win was just their second in their first seven games.

The Yankees and Orioles go at it again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m., with Jameson Taillon taking on right-hander Tyler Wells.
