The Yankees fell to the Orioles in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon, but even though they couldn’t come out on top, the game still capped off an overall successful road trip for the Yankees, and for Gleyber Torres in particular.

Torres, who sent the game into extras with a ground-rule double in the ninth inning, recorded 10 hits during the Yankees’ eight-game road trip, driving in three runs and raising his batting average from .186 to .231 in that span.

The Yankees’ shortstop might not fully be out of his early-season struggles, but as Aaron Boone said Thursday, Torres is on the right path.

“I think the whole week’s been a step in the right direction for him,” Boone said. “I think there were probably two or three balls here, even though he got some hits in this series, obviously, and swung the bat pretty well, there were also a couple of times where he flew out where he got a really good swing off, where he got just under a ball, I feel like two or three times in this series.

“He’s close and the power will happen, but [I’m] at least encouraged by the way he’s moving this last week of at-bats.”

The Bombers went 5-3 on their eight-game trip against the Indians and Orioles, and like Torres, the rest of the New York bats seem to be coming alive.

“Obviously, you go out on a road trip and have a winning record like that, certainly that’s good, but we also know that there was a game or two where one thing here, one thing there and all of a sudden it’s a special trip. I feel like we’re moving in the right direction,” Boone said. “The offense is collectively having better at-bats even though we got shut down a little bit today. We continue to pitch really well, so obviously we go start an important homestand tomorrow with Gerrit going on the mound, and we’ve got to continue to play better and keep it moving.

“Any time you’re in a game and you don’t come through it’s always frustrating, but that’s also part of it. You’re not always going to get the big hit in the big situation. We’ve got to build on some of the positives that are starting to happen offensively. Again… we’re not all the where I know we’re going to get to offensively, but we’re getting closer to that.”
