Aaron Boone gave an update on Luis Severino, who's been rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery and a fresh Grade 2 groin strain he suffered on June 12, ahead of Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

"He's been running, he's been throwing. Possibly by the end of next week he could potentially be on the mound," Boone said. "Could be a few days after that, but probably in the next week to 10 days, he could potentially be on the mound."

Severino had to be taken out of his last rehab start due to the groin injury, a damaging setback for the Yankees who need his arm as soon as possible.

When Severino initially suffered the injury, Boone said that he doesn’t believe anything mechanically was wrong with the righty when he sustained his injury.

“I don’t think so. I think it’s a little bit of just one of those things that can happen from time to time -- that’s my hope on this,” Boone said.

Clarke Schmidt update

Boone gave a positive update on Schmidt, who's been rehabbing his elbow.

"Clarke is actually tomorrow throwing a split-40, so he'll get two ups and then could be facing live hitters," Boone said. "And then I think he's -- if everything goes well with that -- scheduled to face live hitters potentially on Friday."

Even with this progression, Boone said he wasn't sure when Schmidt would be ready for a rehab start.
