The Mets broke out for a four-run eighth inning, securing Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Marlins at Marlins Park in Miami. >> Box score

Six takeaways from Tuesday's game

1. RHP Corey Oswalt made his first big league start since Sept. 28, 2018, which was also against Miami, after LHP David Peterson was scratched and placed on the injured list with shoulder fatigue. After allowing a leadoff single to Jonathan Villar, he picked him off at first base, and retired the minimum through 3.1 innings of work.

2. Brandon Nimmo got the Mets' first hit of the game, which also put them on the board with a solo home run with two outs in the third inning. It was his fourth home run of the year. J.D. Davis added a solo home run, also his fourth of the season, to lead off the fourth frame.

3. Dominic Smith extended his hitting streak to seven games when he drove in a run with an opposite field ground rule double in the fourth inning. Throughout the streak, he is hitting .429 (12-28) with 12 RBI, and has at least one RBI in all but one of those games.

4. After facing the minimum 10 batters at one point, Oswalt started to struggle. He allowed doubles to Matt Joyce and Jesus Aguilar, the latter getting the Marlins on the board, and then Corey Dickerson drove in Aguilar with a two-out single. Oswalt induced a 5-3 putout to Logan Forsythe to avoid further trouble. He finished with 4.1 innings under his belt, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four and walking one.

5. In the eighth inning, after Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch and Robinson Cano doubled down the right field line, Pete Alonso was intentionally walked to load the bases for Smith. Stephen Tarpley walked him on four pitches, extending the Mets’ lead to 5-2. Amed Rosario, who already homered in the seventh inning, extended the lead with a two-run single of his own. Nimmo added an RBI single to give the Mets an 8-2 lead.

6. LHP Justin Wilson, RHP Jared Hughes and RHP Dellin Betances, combined for 3.2 shutout innings of relief, allowing a combined three hits and striking out three batters.

RHP Edwin Diaz did not fare so well, allowing three hits and a run in his first three batters faced. But he still managed to strike out the final three batters and preserve the victory for the Mets.
