The Giants are optimistic that Sterling Shepard's fractured thumb will only keep him out a couple of weeks, and there's hope that rookie Darius Slayton's hamstring will only linger a few more days. That's good news to balance the bad news that Corey Coleman has been lost for the season with a torn ACL.
Still, the Giants' receiving corps wasn't deep to begin with, and that was badly exposed with three injuries on Day 1 of training camp. That's why GM Dave Gettleman is bringing in some help, which he hopes to find with a big wide receiver workout on Saturday.
Kelvin Benjamin, whom Gettleman once drafted in the first round when he was the GM in Carolina (2014), is among the group of receivers who has been invited to attend. And there likely will be several other veteran receivers at the workout, too. Unfortunately for the Giants, the field of available receivers consists of a pretty flawed group.
Here's a look at some of the veterans available, and whether they'd be able to help the Giants or not.
Kelvin Benjamin - He could be an ideal fit for the Giants, especially since Gettleman knows him well. The 6-5, 245-pounder is loaded with talent, but injuries have ruined a career that got off to a blazing start in 2014 (73-1,008-9). He did get run out of town in Carolina due to a feud with Cam Newton, but he'd have to know this is his last shot in the NFL. And if he somehow can stay healthy, he'd be the big receiver the Giants haven't really had in a while.
Michael Crabtree - He's 31, but the 6-1, 215-pounder didn't look done last season when he caught 54 passes for 607 yards in 16 games for the Ravens. He's not a No. 1 receiver anymore, but he wouldn't have to be with the Giants. He could help in the red zone. He also could be looking for more money than the Giants will want to spend.
Pierre Garcon - He's 32 and only played 16 games over the last two seasons due to knee injuries, and that's a pretty lethal combination for a player whose best attribute was speed. He did catch 64 passes in the 16 games he played, though, so he could be a reliable target if he can stay on the field.
Terrance Williams - A foot injury killed his final season with the Cowboys, but he was a pretty solid possession receiver in 2017, catching 53 passes for 568 yards. He's still only 29 and at 6-2, 210 pounds could still be a reliable No. 3 receiver if his foot's OK.
Mike Wallace - He's about to turn 33 and he missed most of last season with a fractured leg, so it's possible he's done. But two years ago, he had a solid 52 catches for 748 yards, which makes him worth a look to see if he's healthy.
Dez Bryant - He tore his Achilles last November, so who knows if he's fully healthy? He's also 30 and hasn't been the Dez Bryant everyone remembers since 2014. There's enough talent there to make him worth it, if only he didn't come with so much else. He's too controversial, too high profile to come in as a player competing for a third-receiver spot. It's hard to see that as a good fit for Gettleman's new Giants "culture."
